OB SCENE (OB SCENA) | PALOMA ORLANDINI CASTRO | ARGENTINA | 2021 | 18 MIN

JURY STATEMENT / Through magnifying lenses, palpable soundscapes and meticulous cinematography a voice invites an audience into a beautiful phantasmagoria of queer imagery. “Ob Scena” by Paloma Orlandini Castro is sublime in its framing and unframing of queer life as grotesquely liberating. Few short films manage to engage in and expand on abstract queer themes as succinctly as “Ob Scena” does, which is why it is awarded the International Jury Short Film Award.

HOW NOT TO DATE WHILE TRANS | NYALA MOON | USA | 2021 | 12 MIN

JURY STATEMENT / This film, while breaking the fourth wall, focuses on the journey of love, and more importantly — self-love, in a world where one still experiences stigma and discrimination. A young trans woman sets the list of the do’s and don’ts, her own dating rules in order to avoid red flags and stay safe, both physically and mentally, while dating other people. It’s a witty, amusing, yet exceptionally respectful way of addressing transgender issues and having an educational conversation with the viewer. Our special mention goes to How Not To Date While Trans by Nyala Moon.

KEEP PUNCHING | KIRNAY BHATT | INDIA | 2020 | 25 MIN

JURY STATEMENT / Sylvester Stallone as famous alter-ego ‘Rocky’ being tattooed on the arm of an aspiring boxer in the small town of Manali, India takes us deeper into the world of Keep Punching written and directed by Kirnay Bhatt. This engaging narrative of a South Asian queer woman battling both in the ring and in her personal life as she struggles to live as her authentic true self, resonates and uplifts with its message of courage and empowerment. For its well-crafted world-building and compelling characterization, we award Keep Punching with the prize of ‘Script’.

DOCUMENTARY (EX AEQUO)

THE BLACK VEIL | LING LEE | UNITED KINGDOM | 2021 | 29 MIN

JURY STATEMENT / Stories of queer love, queer identity and queer community are important to document. These testimonies can reflect our nature and culture, and can often become guiding stars for us on what we are or could become. The Black Veil by Ling Lee tells such a story through Bradley – a non-binary activist of The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence – and their struggle to affirm themself in their marriage to their partner Emma and in their community. Lee’s short doc is in every way an authentic, wholesome and hopeful testament to the future of queer love, which is why we award it the prize for Short Documentary.

FERNÁNDEZ PRATSCH | EMILIANO SPAMPINATO | SPAIN | 2020 | 30 MIN

JURY STATEMENT / A film filled with historic queer moments, recounted by the most unique characters. Presented honestly, in its beauty, its absurdity, its drama, and with all its truths. It was a pleasure to discover each moment presented in this film, as a beautiful portrait that honored its subjects. Connecting us to both a contemporary and an historical queer community.

MONA | XAVIER GOULD | CANADA | 2021 | 23 MIN

JURY STATEMENT / For Canadian Film we chose a film that spoke to us through its authentic storytelling, introducing us to a character we all know: a girl seeking to leave her small town life and become famous while also showing us the beauty of the east coast. This film remains in our thoughts long after viewing. It is with joy that we give the prize for best Canadian film to Mona by Xavier Gould.

THE MAN OF MY DREAMS ​​| TRISTAN SCOTT-BEHRENDS | USA | 2021 | 6 MIN

JURY STATEMENT / We all agreed this film was a dreamy poetic love story. Moments felt nostalgic, like experiencing your first love. I adored the costumes, music, and cinematography. That is why we felt Man of my Dreams deserved a Short Film Award.

INDIGIQUEER

LULLABY | IRÈNE-KIMBERLEY VALIN-AWASHISH | CANADA | 2021 | 4 MIN

JURY STATEMENT / This short was captivating and drew us in with both its message and striking visuals. For Indigiqueer film we selected Lullaby.

SCRIPT

MAKE ME A KING | SOFIA OLINS | UNITED KINGDOM | 2021 | 16 MIN

JURY STATEMENT / To tell a story, you need to have a solid script. This film is particularly touching in its sweetness in telling a difficult story while representing an important queer reality. Not only that, but it also brings a breath of fresh air with its extremely touching, hopeful ending. We award the prize for script to Make Me a King by Sofia Olins.

SPECIAL MENTION

PARVIS | LAURENCE GAGNÉ-FRÉGEAU | CANADA | 2021 | 12 MIN

JURY STATEMENT / Dynamic, hectic, diverse and colorful. The audience is invited to the table and can absolutely relate to the main character’s narrative. A simple and complex approach, very well done by this Quebec filmmaker!
