Odehimin (Baie du coeur) | Kijâtai-Alexandra Veillette-Cheezo | CANADA

JURY STATEMENT / The jury was taken by the intimacy of the body of an indigenous femme, of the calling of ancestral strenghts to love your body in resistance in the face of colonial systems. Utilizing land informed methodologies to connect us to the cyclical nature of indigenous methods of storytelling.

All Those Sensations in my Belly | Marko Djeska | CROATIA

JURY STATEMENT / By using an innovative approach to animation and fluid imagery throughout, this film deftly shows the audience a unique and honest depiction of self-discovery by exploring gender sexuality and the many hardships one can face when met with resistance from others.

Riverside Queerness | Eric Plamondon | CANADA

JURY STATEMENT / Through three poetic perspectives edged in blood, multi-hyphenate Eric Plamondon crosses borders and offers us tales of pain and desire on the way towards healing.

JURY STATEMENT / Using the five calls to Muslim evening prayers as a narrative structure, this film creatively illustrates a break up with all it’s messiness and beauty. With sophisticated storytelling strategies, Director Fawzi Marzi gives us a quietly bold film about rituals and relationships.

JURY STATEMENT / Even though non-linear and cross-cutting between past and future, this script had solid character work. It documents time very well and considers the outside world as well as weaving an intimate love story.

JURY STATEMENT / Because of the way the story unfolds and the turns through which we get to know the plot and the problems of the characters, keeping our eyes on our toes at all times.

JURY STATEMENT / Taking derogatory stereotypes as a jumping off point, Alejandro Serratos’ stylishly authentic documentary is as exploratory and freeing as the honest stories his subject’s tell.

JURY STATEMENT / As an unfolding attraction between a model and her photographer reveals the tensions of its power dynamic, a woman begins to inhabit her beauty and sexuality, finding the true strength of her character, and Ophélie Bau and Sauce Ena reveal every tiny, electric flicker of emotion.

JURY STATEMENT / Pompeii’s filmmakers harness an ephemeral form (Instagram stories) to excavate the build-up of micro-aggression and full-fledged discrimination in the layered nightlife of a partygoer of colour, deftly managing both humour and horror.

JURY STATEMENT / Through expert use of animation, music, and motion, the approach to storytelling in this film truly stands out. The viewer may well forget that it is animation at all since all the elements that make up the film gel together so fluidly as if it has a life of its own.

JURY STATEMENT / The cinematography plays a huge part in this film; not only is it spectacular to view but it helps the narrative and accentuates the dance movement with agile camera work.

JURY STATEMENT / For the way in which the story is told from the image that makes it possible that dialogues are not necessary to convey emotions, careful framing and handling of lights.

JURY STATEMENT / For the quality of the sound editing and the sound mix that perfectly accompany the story.

JURY STATEMENT / With very broad sound cuts and brilliant mixing, the immaculate sound design succeeded in creating the mood and atmosphere of the time the film was set in and through every stage of the story.

JURY STATEMENT / The costume and makeup becomes a character in itself in this film. It lends to the beauty of the story and the portrayal of the boys; making for a memorable and significant feature of the film.

JURY STATEMENT / The streets, beach, club, and apartment were all expertly set up to relay the time and space as well as the personalities of the characters within the story. It was apparent that a lot of attention to detail had been put in place which further helps the audience invest in the characters as the story is told.
